Description
Echinacea is one of the best herbs to halt viruses and infections in their tracks! If I feel like I’m catching a cold, have a sore throat, runny nose, or just feel “off”, my first go to remedy is my echinacea tincture. It is not only anti-inflammatory and immune boosting, but its also diuretic, carminative, and laxative (which can be a blessing when the belly is off).
I generally take 20 drops hourly for 24 hours at the first sign of illness, then if needed I take 10 drops 2-3x a day until I feel well. I have never needed to take it for more than 4 days!
Echinacea stimulates killer T-cells (your first line of defense when fighting infection), and increases the production of white blood cells in the body, which are the main soldiers in the battle against illness going on in our bodies every day.
This beautiful plant contains a compound called echinacein, which actually inhibits bacteria and viruses from penetrating healthy cells!!
Echinacea is not only used to stop viruses and infections from amping up their hold in the body, but many folks use it in smaller doses to treat chronic infections such as genital herpes, maleria, syphilis, urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast infections, gum diseases, bloodstream infections, and recurring ear infections.
I use the flower and leaf of this plant when making my medicine. I choose to leave the roots in the ground because the root contains a higher amount of PA’s (Pyrrolizidine alkaloids). PA’s can damage the liver when taken in high doses. Many plants contain these alkaloids. Drying the plant parts used diminishes the alkaloids, but may not completely destroy them. So I don’t take a chance.
And… remember, echinacea can cease to have an effect and can actually impact your T-cells in a negative way if used in LARGE doses consistently, over a long period of time. It should not be overused, but when you need it, nothing works better!
