Description
This years CUT THE CRAP QUICK COUGH Blend contains Common Lungwort, Mullein Leaf, Bee Balm, Calendula flowers, Apple Mint, Goldenrod, New England Purple Aster, Autumn Olive Berry, Blackberry, and Dark Red Cherries.
Chemical analysis of lungwort has shown that the plant composition includes tannins, flavonoids, saponins, and vitamin C. However, dissimilar to many other members of the borage family, lungwort DOES NOT CONTAIN pyrrolizidine alkaloids (the chemical constituent that can harm the liver).
Lungwort is expectorant and emollient, excellent for hot, tight, congested chest complaints as it encourages production and removal of excess phlegm.
Being drying, it can also be used to dry conditions such as bronchitis and laryngitis too.
Lungwort is particularly good for advanced cases of lung illness, where long inflammation has begun to break down the connective tissue that supports the lungs. (For more about this, read Matthew Wood’s excellent book ‘The Earthwise Herbal’ – it deserves a place on every herbalist’s bookshelf!)
The silica present as silicic acid, restores elasticity to the lungs, while the antibiotic properties may well be responsible for its reputation as a tuberculosis healing herbal ally!
Mullein and purple aster are especially to help those struggling with asthma, bronchitis, chronic cough from smoking, cough stuck in your chest, and I have even used this blend with a few clients who struggled with scars on their lungs.
Mullein leaf extract and tincture is anti-spasmodic and Expectorant. It relaxes the bronchial tract while also relieving cough and phlegm. This cough remedy works without sedation, making it suitable for children (dose is half of adults)
Mullein is an extremely potent, safe, and profoundly effective respiratory tonic. This herb aids in the opening of the lungs, relief from spasms, tightness, and cough, and relief from irritation and dryness.
New England Purple Aster is an amazing respiratory remedy, being uniquely clearing, relaxing & decongesting to the head & lungs. This effect is readily apparent when taking a bit of the tincture; the effects aren’t subtle and can be easily perceived. It seems to act very effectively to break up stuffy lung and (to as lesser extent) sinus congestion, though it’s not especially astringent it doesn’t stop a drippy nose as well as goldenrod. It is, however, uniquely antispasmodic for the lung tissue; it relaxes and dilates the respiratory passages.
Goldenrod is a premier decongestant, effectively alleviating upper respiratory congestion stemming from allergies, sinusitis, flu, or the common cold. I also appreciate this lovely flowering plant for its ability to help relieve muscle and joint pain, which can often times accompany colds and flu.
AppleMint has antiseptic properties, improves digestion, reduces fever and headaches, and adds a lovely minty flavor.
Bee Balm (Monarda fistulosa) has been used for colds, flu, upper respiratory problems, gas, diarrhea, nausea, fevers and whooping cough!
The fruits I added (Autumn Olive, Blackberry, and Dark Red Cherries) all contain high levels of vitamin C!
